This is a wonderful story but this printing is practically worthless. This "book" is just a cheap printing of the document that is available free online from the Gutenberg Project. At least the on-line version has illustrations. The print is so small it is practically unreadable. The printer did not even bother to add page numbers. Do not waste your money!! Read the book online. It is much easier to read from the computer than this printing.

The Little Colonel in Arizona eBook Annie F Annie Fellows Johnston Etheldred B Etheldred Breeze Barry Reviews

If you watched the Shirley Temple movie of "The Little Colonel", then you already know Lloyd Sherman!
Lloyd moves to Kentucky and decides to pay a visit to her estranged grandfather, a Kentucky colonel.
How both their lives change makes this a very enjoyable read, Then, read all the other books in the series!
The book came in on time and in good condition. It was bought as a gift so I can say anymore about it.
Great book
This is the book I remembered from my childhood. Beware, however, it has very racist sayings and should be monitored with children.
This is a good children's story but it is a product of the period in which it was written. It uses term for black servants and children that are offensive in todays society.
I first read this series of books at age 8-13. The main library at Ft. Knox, KY had them in circulation and since I visited several times a week the children's librarian had a hard time keeping up with me. I loved the characters and their pranks but I especially loved reading about a south that hadn't quite given up pre-Civil War ways of life while coping with a brand new century. The books (as most of that era were) served as sweet treatises teaching lessons and manners to upper-middle and upper class children. I didn't mind, they were so well written and so descriptive, I simply loved them. When I turned 14, I was thrilled to discover they were about a real girl living in a real place only fifty miles away. My mother took me on a road trip and I was amazed at how little the sleepy southern town was changed from the books. I started re-reading the books a few months ago and was truly surprised how entertaining and charming they still were, unlike other books that tend to grow larger in memory than they were at first read.

I do have one caveat. Some folks might get offended by the depiction of the black servants. Please don't, the author has been dead for probably 90-100 years. She was speaking in language of her time, the 1890s to 1910s, while we're reading them in our 2010s frame of reference.
I did not read this as a child, so my review is not tinged with nostalgia. I thought this was just OK. I thought Lloyd was one of the most annoying children I have ever met. I was told that I would not like it because it was quite racist. I didn't think it was racist as much as reflective of the way things were in that place at that time.

I think if you read this as a child you will like reading it again. Other than that, it's just OK.
